What is Hives?

Hives (urticaria) is an itchy rash caused by a small amount of fluid leaking from blood vessels just below the skin surface. This skin reaction may vary from person to person in color and size. The causes of chronic hives may be different. Chronic hives can be caused by stress, medications, nutrients, physical or non-physical alerts, thyroid diseases, rheumatic diseases, and autoimmune diseases.

How is Hives Diagnosed?

Hives diagnosis can be made easily with a detailed history and examination findings. After the diagnosis of hives is made clinically, it is necessary to examine the causes of hives in detail.

If a food allergy is suspected for patients with hives, a skin test or blood test is performed to investigate the cause of the allergy. In our center, we can detect nearly 300 allergens for foods and inhalants with molecular allergy testing.

Allergy doctors are making investigations based on information obtained from history to determine the cause of the hives.

If medicines are suspected as the cause of hives, special tests are made from the blood, and if necessary, drug allergy tests and drug provocations to diagnose.

Sometimes hives can be caused by thyroid gland, liver diseases, rheumatic diseases and autoimmune diseases. Therefore, examinations are made for these diseases when necessary. Urticaria can develop in one or three of the patients with physical or non-physical stimuli. Approximately one-third of children and adults with hives may develop hives due to stimulations. As a result, it is very important to investigate these causes and to treat them by finding the real cause, as hives can have many causes, especially for more than 6 weeks or recurrent hives.

What Should I Pay Attention To When I Come to Have an Allergy Test?

Some drugs that may affect the results of allergy tests need to be discontinued 1 week before the allergy test. Some of these drugs are; cough syrups, cold medicines, allergy medications. Antibiotics and inhaled drugs do not affect allergy tests. During an allergy test, the child should not have a breathlessness.

At what age can allergy tests be done?

Although it can be done at any age, food tests can be done from 1-2 months of age. For asthma and allergic rhinitis, allergy tests can be made from the age of 1-2.

How is Hives Treatment Made at Hives -Urticaria- Branch?

First, a history should be taken well. It should be questioned whether there is a relationship with foods, drugs, insect bites, infection, physical stimulation. In the examination of the patients, it is evaluated whether there is any finding that can determine the severity of urticaria and the cause of urticaria according to the findings. The factors that trigger urticaria are avoided.

Protection Treatment in Suddenly Developed Hives

It is necessary to be protected from the factors that trigger urticaria and foods that cause urticaria. It is necessary to avoid hot bathing, spices, excessive exercise.

Drug Treatment in Suddenly Developing Hives

If the urticaria is not serious, only antihistamine therapy and cooling lotions are given for itchy areas. If we are faced with a severe picture of acute urticaria, intravenous adrenaline, chlorpheniramine and systemic corticosteroid treatments are preferred according to the severity of the event. Serious cases should be treated with hospitalization. If the patient has an allergic shock condition called anaphylaxis, allergic shock therapy should be performed.

How to Treat Chronic Hives?

History is very important in the treatment of chronic urticaria. First of all, it should be evaluated whether there is angioedema or not. Relationship with physical alerts, infections, drugs, nutrients and skin care should be questioned. Whether there is a cause-related finding in physical examination should be questioned. Drugs such as pain medications, acetylsalicylic acid should be questioned. Treatment should be done according to the severity of the urticaria. First of all, antihistamines without sedation should be preferred.

If there is no response to 2-4 weeks of treatment, the dose should be increased up to 4 times. In severe exacerbations, corticosteroid therapy can be applied for 10 days. If the antihistamine treatment was increased 4 times, but no response was received for 2-4 weeks, mon., H2 antihistamine addition, cycosporine treatment should be considered.

In cases where there is no response to these treatments, oma treatment should be considered.
